Reviving the Walled Food Garden Landscape

Location   Xiaomen Island, Walled Food Gardens

To block the relentless northeast winds, early settlers used basalt rocks and coral stones to build walls around their food gardens, forming a network of walled gardens that have become a unique cultural landscape of Xiaomen Village. With the drying up of fresh water supplies and people moving away from the island, many of the walled food gardens have gradually fallen into disuse and the traditional wisdom accrued through generations and the connection to the land has gradually been lost. This landscape art project aims to restore the walled gardens and bring them back into cultivation once again by focusing on the aspirations of the village residents. With traditional local wisdom and guidance from seasoned experts, this project is injecting new, green creativity and vitality, along with physical implementation, in rebuilding the relationship between people and the land and reviving the precious walled food garden culture and landscape of the village community.
