The Edges of the Wind

YU Wen Fu
Xiaomen Island Walled Food Gardens

Between the slope toward the ocean and the walled food gardens of Xiaomen Island, artist Yu Wen Fu has created his art installation by planting bamboo stick after bamboo stick deeply into the ground in a manner reminiscent of the planting of rice seedlings by farmers. This action, repeated over and over thousands of times with the same persistence and will of farmers, is a response to the way in which local people, the ocean and the wind interact with each other. The bamboo sticks, soft yet hard, moving slowly up between the slope toward the ocean and the cultivated fields in a color gradient of dark and light blues and white reflect the water that runs to the ocean, the sounds of the sea and the wind, the directional instincts of the sky and plains and a reverberating, symphonic vector.
